I’m guessing you’ve heard NPR’s This American Life. Equally great, but newer and lesser known is Radio Lab, another NPR program. P and I have our computers set to automatically download the podcasts of these shows each week. We put these podcasts on P’s iPod and listen to them during flights and long car rides. During our recent travels, we were listening to a Radio Lab episode on the topic of placebos, and I want to share this interesting fact I learned: Throughout the entire world, it has been found that sleeping pill placebos that are blue in color are more effective than those that are red. The one exception is with Italian men. The best explanation for this is that Italy’s soccer team is named Blue (except in Italian).
