Today is my mom’s birthday. I took that photo of our shadows during a road trip we took a couple of summers ago. We went skinny dipping on that trip.

Marigolds make me think of my mom, who is a marvelous gardener. When my sister and I were young, she’d have us collect the seeds from the spent marigold flowers. We’d put them in a paper bag, and she’d save them for the next year. I have good memories of collecting those seeds – being outside with the sun and smell of the flowers. Thinking back on those times, I envision my mom with her hair pulled back with clips. She always looked so pretty like that. I love you, mom.
