Yesterday, we played broom ball with a bunch of P’s coworkers. It was so fun! The game is played on ice, but you wear regular shoes, not ice skates. (A very cool thing about Minneapolis is that, during the winter, the city clears spots on lakes and floods parks to make ice skating rinks all over the place.) Each person has a broom with duct tape wrapped around the bristles to make a sort of club. There are two goal areas like in hockey, and you run around on the ice trying to hit a ball into your goal. It was a great workout – I’m sore now. I might also be sore due to falling repeatedly. There was something liberating about falling down – I don’t really fall down anymore. When I was little, I fell because I was learning to walk. As I got older, I fell trying to do stupid things (related to skiing or skateboarding or drinking). But now I don’t fall. Maybe I should be taking advantage of every opportunity to eat it before my body can no longer handle such things.
P and I leave today for our holiday excursions. We’re driving to DC to spend Christmas with my family. (My sister and cousin live there.) After Christmas, we’re going up to Boston to be with P’s family. We might also head up to Maine, where P’s brother and his family live. We plan on getting back here to Minneapolis on January 6th or so. I don’t know how much writing I’ll be doing between now and then.
Happy holidays!
